Edakkel Cave

Yesterday we left the game park and headed towards Vythiri Rainforest resort in Kerala, a southwestern state. Along the way we stopped at Edakkel Cave. This cave has pictographs from 4000BC. We had to climb significantly just to make it to the cave.

After visiting the cave, I took off to climb to the top of the mountain. Kathy waited at the cave. She was part of the tourist attraction, chatting with numerous Indians. It is 5000 feet above sea level. I'm not sure how far above the surrounding countryside. It took another 1.5 hours hiking. The view was tremendous. Going up wasn't too bad. Coming down was a major challenge. I actually got a guide to help me. One misstep and I would have fallen several hundred feet. I made it down, anyway.

Kerala has a strong Christian community. Saint Thomas is said to have come here and established the first churches. I found the Virgin Mary shrine (photo below) to closely parallel the shrines around Stevens Point and the rest of central Wisconsin.

A few of the road shots below are of tea and coffee plantations.
